App: CentVPN (Android package com.mavodev.openvpnneo)
Last updated: 25 July 2026
This Privacy Policy explains what data the CentVPN app (“the app”, “CentVPN”) processes, how it is used, and with whom it is shared. CentVPN is an open-source OpenVPN client for Android. It is designed to run without any developer-operated backend: the developer does not collect, transmit, sell, or store any personal data about you.
1. Who is responsible
The developer (“we”, “us”) is the data controller for the limited processing described below:
- Maximilian Vogt (mavodev)
- Contact: info@mavodev.de
- Full legal / imprint details: https://www.mavodev.de/impressum/
2. Summary
- We do not operate any server that receives your data.
- We do not use analytics, advertising, tracking SDKs, or crash-reporting services.
- We do not log, monitor, or store your VPN traffic or browsing activity.
- Your VPN configuration files, certificates, and keys stay on your device.
- The only optional outbound requests the app itself makes are to the third-party
services
api.country.is(if you enable the country display) andvpngate.net(if you enable the optional free public server list) — both features are off by default.
3. Data the app processes
3.1 VPN profiles, certificates and keys
To connect to a VPN, you import or create OpenVPN profiles (.ovpn
files), which may include server addresses, certificates, private keys, and
credentials. This information is stored locally on your device only
and is used solely to establish the VPN connection you request. It is never sent
to the developer.
3.2 VPN network traffic
When a VPN connection is active, your device’s network traffic is routed through the OpenVPN server defined in your chosen profile. CentVPN does not inspect, record, or retain the contents of this traffic. How your traffic is handled once it reaches the VPN server is governed by the operator of that server (see Section 5).
3.3 Optional country / public-IP display (opt-in)
CentVPN includes an optional feature that displays your current public IP address and country. You are asked whether to enable it on first run, and you can turn it on or off at any time under Settings → Show country/IP.
When (and only when) this feature is enabled, the app sends a request to the
third-party geolocation service api.country.is
(https://api.country.is/). This request transmits your public IP
address to that service, which returns your IP and a country code. That response
is stored locally on your device (to show flags next to your
profiles and your current country) and is not shared with the developer. The
developer neither owns nor controls api.country.is; its handling of
your IP address is governed by its own privacy policy.
If you do not enable this feature, the app makes no such request.
3.4 Optional free public server list (opt-in)
CentVPN includes an optional “Free public servers” feature that lets you browse and import free, community-run OpenVPN servers provided by the VPNGate project (University of Tsukuba, Japan). This feature is off by default and must be explicitly enabled (with a consent prompt) under Settings → Free public servers.
When (and only when) you use this feature, the app downloads the public server
list from vpngate.net (https://www.vpngate.net/api/iphone/).
This is a plain download of a publicly available list; the request does not include
any personal data or identifiers beyond what any ordinary web request necessarily
reveals to the server (such as your IP address). The downloaded list is cached
locally on your device. If you then import and connect to one of
these servers, your traffic is handled by that server’s operator (an unknown
third party) — see Section 5. The developer neither owns nor controls
vpngate.net or the servers it lists.
If you do not enable this feature, the app makes no such request.
3.5 Local app settings and state
App preferences (such as your feature toggles, selected profile, cached country/IP result, and log entries) are stored locally on your device so the app can function. This data does not leave your device except as described in Sections 3.3 and 3.4.
4. Android permissions and why they are used
| Permission | Why the app uses it |
|---|---|
INTERNET | Establish the VPN connection and, if you enable the corresponding optional features, query the country service and download the VPNGate public server list. |
ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE | Detect network availability and changes to manage the connection. |
BIND_VPN_SERVICE / VpnService | Create the local VPN tunnel. Required for any VPN app. |
FOREGROUND_SERVICE (special use: VPN) | Keep the VPN running reliably while the app is in the background, with a persistent notification. |
POST_NOTIFICATIONS | Show the ongoing VPN status/connection notification. |
RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED | Optionally restore a VPN connection after device restart, if you configured it. |
READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE (Android 12 / API 32 and below only) | Import .ovpn configuration files you select. |
QUERY_ALL_PACKAGES | Let you choose which installed apps are allowed or disallowed through the VPN (per-app VPN). The app list is used only on your device to render this selection. |
These permissions are used strictly for the functions above. They are not used to collect data for the developer.
5. Third parties
Because CentVPN has no developer backend, the only parties that may receive data are:
- The VPN server / provider you connect to. You choose this via the profile you import. Your traffic is handled according to that operator’s privacy policy. Please review it separately.
- api.country.is — only if you enable the optional country feature (see Section 3.3). Your public IP is sent to this service.
- vpngate.net (VPNGate) — only if you enable the optional free public server list (see Section 3.4). The app downloads the public server list from this service; if you connect to a listed server, that server’s operator (an unknown third party) handles your traffic under its own terms.
- Google Play — distribution of the app is handled by Google Play, which may process data (e.g., for app delivery and crash reporting at the OS/store level) under Google’s own privacy policy, independently of the app.
We do not sell or share any personal data, and we have no ability to do so, since we do not receive it.
6. Data retention
All data the app uses is stored locally on your device and remains only for as long as the app is installed or until you delete it (for example by removing a profile, clearing app data, or uninstalling the app). Uninstalling the app removes its locally stored data. The developer retains nothing, because the developer receives nothing.
7. Children
CentVPN is a general-purpose networking utility and is not directed at children. It does not knowingly collect any personal data from anyone, including children.
8. Security
VPN connections are secured using the OpenVPN protocol and the cryptographic material contained in your profiles. Configuration files, certificates, and keys are kept in the app’s private storage on your device. You are responsible for keeping your device and your profile files secure.
9. Your rights
Depending on your jurisdiction (for example under the EU/EEA GDPR), you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or port your personal data, and to object to or restrict its processing. Because CentVPN stores your data only on your own device and the developer does not collect it, you can exercise most of these rights directly: view, edit, or delete your profiles and settings in the app, or uninstall the app to remove its data. For any questions, contact us at the address in Section 1. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection authority.
10. Google Play “Data safety” alignment
Consistent with this policy, CentVPN’s Data safety declaration states that the
app does not collect or share user data with the developer. The only user-initiated
network transmissions besides the VPN tunnel itself are the optional public-IP
lookup to api.country.is (Section 3.3) and the optional download of the
public server list from vpngate.net (Section 3.4); neither is collected
by the developer.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time, for example if the app’s features change. The current version will always be available at this URL, and the “Last updated” date above will reflect the latest revision.
